An unsolved Iron Age mystery, death
Of Tolland Man continues to perplex.
Modern-day scientists examined his
Emaciated, dark body. Some findings
Were straightforward, while others are
Veiled in Celtic Iron Age ritual and
A ligature of woven sinew around his
Neck indicates death by hanging,
Execution for heinous acts committed
Or an unwilling offering to a vengeful
Nordic god. In death’s sleep, his naked
Body was placed restfully on its side,
Submerged into cold, acidic bog.
For two centuries the mire possessively
Held him in within its depths, until
By chance two brothers unearthed
Him methodically digging peat.
Clad with only a pointed leather cap,
Tollund Man emerged, his body
Mummified, anatomically complete.
For over sixty years, the Tollund
Man has been revered, studied to
Discern distant Teutonic life. His
Dark, thin face resembles that of
Modern man, friend or family,
Poised quietly at a warming camp-
Fire, working leather with his knife.
With humble words and adoration,
We honor Tollund Man and the
Solemn passing of his poet and
Nobel Laureate, Irishman Seamus
Heaney. His verses, laced with
Deathly images, exemplified his
Fervor for love, life, and divine
